Greetings, Crypters,

I've been doing some retro-gaming lately, and I'm wondering your thoughts about a few things. I'm way behind the curve on SP games, which I see as a good/bad thing.

Way back in the day I fired up Far Cry, but lost interest when the trigens showed up. At that point it struck me as boring -- monsters that couldn't throw nades, etc. Not to mention that the game difficulty seemed to spike. But now I've gone back to it, and boy was I wrong! I've had weeks of fun with this game. The conversations between the mercs are often a really funny commentary on the state of FPS gaming at the time. I don't like that I can't save anywhere, but this game is one of the few that (almost) gets save points right.

I played partway through Quake 4 years ago before my computer blew up. As with most Raven games, it was pretty thin, but I kinda liked what I saw -- just never overthink with a Raven game. I'm guessing I'm about halfway through. Any thoughts on whether it's worth finishing?

I bought Doom3 only to be able to play the Thief modification that uses the D3 engine (the reviews of D3 were bad enough that I avoided it for a long time). I played the first part of the game and was glad to see the nods to Half-Life and System Shock2, then was struck by how un-fun it was compared to Doom 1 and 2. It just seems a design fail. Unless there's someting compelling that I'm missing, I see no reason to come back to this one. Is there? Come on, id, you're better than that!

I've played the first part of Stalker and really liked it. Then pesky RL took over and I didn't have time to follow through. I know that the game is especially harsh without some tweaks, but I'm not sure which. More research needed. Has anyone here finished this game? Any thoughts?

I'm also reaching *way* back and playing Deus Ex. I'd always heard it's a classic, so I felt an obligation to give it a go. I'm not interested in RPGs generally, but I've enjoyed this one. I've just entered the Japanese level. I've heard that the second game is to be avoided, but I guess I'll explore that issue when I'm done with the first game. So I'm no Deus Ex or RPG purist -- looking at it from that perspective, would any of you recommend the second game?

I completed Bioshock some years ago, and really liked it. Well, the shooting was kind of off, but the game was great. I look forward to playing the second one when I have a competent computer. And the Metro game.

Cheers, PC gamers,

Angry Turnip

Could you repeat your question?

Which of those games are worth playing?

I tend to get a wee bit fired up talking about games. I think I just cornered you at a party and talked till your eyes glazed over.

Also, did you know that [insert multi-level marketing opportunity here]!

I have to say the first "Soldier of Fortune" is the game that I will always remember. It used the Quake 2 engine and was the first game you could actually blow limbs and heads off. My second would be FEAR. If you can find SOF and figure out a way to run it, I would play it again. Redneck Rampage was pretty badass too.

I played SoF back in the day and really liked it. Laughably violent, but fun. I remember the Old Man Murray review of it, which was really funny. If I recall correctly, the de-limbing (and even de-sunglassing with the right shot) was Raven's "GHOUL" system. Fun stuff. The game even let you -- almost -- off Saddam Hussein. If the game had let you do that, then we'd have averted the entire second war in Iraq!

I missed out on Fear because back then because I didn't have a system that would run it. But I've heard it's great.

I'm glad that you found Redneck Rampage. It's one of the greats, IMO. And I think many FPS fans missed out on it. I recently bought the series from Good Old Games just for the happy memories. When I think back to the 90s, I think: DOOM, Heretic, Redneck Rampage, Thief, and HL. (And one of the few RPGs I've played, System Shock 2.) In what other game would you find a Turd Minion? Awesome. Did you play all of the RR games? The angry jackelope and crazy cheerleader in the later/last game were hilarious. I liked the Pueblo/Anasazi level . . . like touring Mesa Verde National Park at night.

I'm now wrapping up a couple of other old shooters -- Chrome and TimeShift. I think that TimeShift is another game that many FPS fans missed out on because it had the misfortune of being released at a time when a lot of other heavy-hitters (one of which was ET:QW) appeared on the market. And they had earlier released a demo in . . . 2005 or so that was horrible. It was glitchy and the game was obviously not on the right track. So the company completely retooled, fired Dennis Quaid as the lead voice actor, and released a very different game. Tom Chick's positive review convinced me to buy it. It came out in 2007, I believe, so it's not *that* dated. It begins slowly, having you run through trenches and tight corridors, but then it opens up and becomes incredibly fun to play. The time-shifting mechanic actually works. Very fun to hit "stop" or "slow" and race up and grab away an enemy's weapon. Or race up and plant a cluster nade on one of them, then back away. Boom.

It's one of those games where, at various points, you can kind of see through the design and sense that someone who was building it really *gets* what's fun about a well-designed shooter. One of the few SPs that made me grin while playing it.

Slam, I've heard that the most recent Deus Ex is a good game. I'm still working my way (very happily) through the first one. The same studio/publisher that developed the most recent DE is also working on a new Thief game. I'm keeping my fingers crossed about that. They have a high bar to match what Looking Glass Studios did with the first two games. The Thief series is probably my favorite ever. Some years ago I happened to have the good fortune of meeting a number of the developers at a restaurant one evening. It was nice to shake their hands and say thanks for some great games. Smile

I've purchased Bioshock 2 and Metro through Steam and look forward to playing them when I get the chance. I hear that they're both very good.

I had downloaded Redneck Rampage from GOG but could not get it to run. How did you manage?
