| I think I know why my pc is lagging (connection is fine). I downloaded a couple handfuls of .mp3 files from www.kohit.net .. Now a week later Im reaping shit. my AVG virus detector has found nothing , CPU usage / performance is roller coastering , ran disk defrag , some reason my Backup files cannot be restored, they are gone... Haven't a clue on how to fix my PC ... last time this happened I had to buy a new Windows CD and reboot everything. /fail | |

| -i've heard, couldn't find a good reference, that some AVs will remove a virus/suspected virus out of system restore folder, thereby breaking the restore, but don't give up on restore just yet (unless you've tried this already, in bold) -be sure to turn off, disable all AV software you have going right now (type services.msc on the run menu and manually disable if necessary), sometimes they will block the restore process.
-try restoring from your earliest restore point. if it works, keep restoring "up" until you hit the last good.-virus troubleshooting-what are the indications besides ones mentioned? page redirects? "windows antivirus ads? anything overt? -run taskmgr from the start menu, look for anything suspicious, if your not sure what's suspicious, send a list of running processes. anything running not as system bears a close look in particular -in taskmgr also make sure the memory is visible and do a sort from high to low (by clicking on the top label) and see what's consuming the most memory -in system32 directory, make sure to unhide all folders, then do a sort by name, any files recent and funny looking? there's lots of ways to track these down and kill 'em, i've yet to meet one that required a reload (although some took an awful long time and a few of the new ones had me wondering if "this would be the one"... so let me know, especially if the alternative is buying software, my peeps get free tech support. (i don't have many peeps so this is viable) in addition to spybot ad adaware, (both have bailed me out in the past) run glary utilities, the interface is easy, run the first option first, the all in one cleaner, but then play around with the rest of the interface, under a tab called something like optimize you can look at your startup entries for example. the following has been good for removing some really pain in the ass viruses at work lately. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php. we use kaspersky by the way, (which is free for home use i think), we had trend, which was so/so, and i didn't go symantec because of the ungodly footprint of the software. anyway, let me know how it pans out. |

| Try this one as well http://www.spywareterminator.com/ It asks if you want to go to certain websites that it has in it's database that is marked as bad, or if you know it's safe you can mark the site as good. It also monitors programs being installed on computer and so on.. though I alaways shut the task bar program down to play quake wars... Also you shouldn't have to buy a new windows cd to reinstal OS... What prevented you from installing what you had? | |

| how old is your pc. maybe do this if its old/dirty enough, take your pc apart carefully and clean it. beware of static elctricity when u touch circuitry, mainly focus on using pipe cleaners to clean ur heatsink for ur processor and possibley even do it to your power supply and video card. i have had problems with dust/dirt getting in those places. cleaning it out helped for me. seems to me the inability to dissipate heat on these things can give you misleading problems. (at least in my experience with my old pc) and i kno u a smoker ( hehe ) so u prolly got some cleaning to do. | |

/fail OK, I am not the pc guru here, but I have had some experience dealing with the nasty trojans that bog down systems. Let me itemize your symptons: CPU performance is maxing out at certain times ( or all the time?). Back-up files will not restore to any previous time. Restore dates not showing. Massive lag but connection speed is good. With the system restore down, I still suspect you are infected. Newer trojans will block system restores (or even infect restore files). Trojans disable AV suites the ability to properly update, but still show the AV as working. They used to disable the AV, but changes to most AV suites have given the hackers a different avenue for attack. Downloading anything without scanning before opening is always an invitation to enabling a virus or trojan. 1. If you are using Avast still, I recommend you uninstall it and re-install. This will get you to the memory check that can clean the root memory and restore files that are probably infected. 2. Try the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356&displaylang=en3. Housecall by Trend Microvirus is free as well: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/4. Clean the registry with TweakNow Registry Cleaner: http://www.tweaknow.com/The entire process takes hours, but cleaning up the mess gets you back in the game. The last thing you should do is wipe the fucking thing clean and re-load everything. That is absolutely after you have tried everything and nothing works. |

try to find out what kind of motherboard you have , if/when u find out, u can go online and lookup the manul for it , there you should be able to find out how to get to the BIOS to proceed to next step of "wiping" :flower: .

| The only thing I can think of doing is to check the manufacture web site and look in the support section for computer model and go from there.
The other thing to try is Ctrl-Alt-Del once to bring up the Task Manager and google all the running tasks and look them over carefully.

| it can be tricky knowing when to push those F keys. when my buddy installed the os for the first time on my new rig he just kept pushing the correct key after he turned it on till it brought up what he needed it to bring up (but he knew which key)
so if u know which key, ur prolly missing and hitting it too late. as soon as u turn on ur pc just start (and keep) hittin that key. definitely try what cloister said first, if u got the technique down and it still wont work, then what i said is probably the problem (the button mashing timing).... its tricky doing this, my buddy had to restart my pc like 3 times before he was able to get the timing right. i forget if it was a certain screen or right after a certain screen. i will be doing something similiar as you when i finally hook my 2nd WD velociraptor 150g harddrive up in RAID "0". my 2nd drive is still just sitting in there not hooked up xDxDxD
LOL at ur smiley in front of a black hole

| Kilo, are you (and you probably are) using a usb keyboard? If you are, AND legacy usb support in the bios isn't enabled then no key pressess before a certain point in the boot process (and way too late for accessing the restore partition like you're trying to do) will register, including of course the correct f key combo.
Way to test this is see if you can access the BIOS, if you can then usb legacy support is enabled.
If this is the problem then the solution is to plug in an old ps2 keyboard and use that.
Of course that's just one possibility for why you're unable to access the restore partition. I may have missed it, what kind of system do you have? Dell? Gateway? Other? Home-built?

| Yep Alpha, USB for sure. Yes ... one of the many possibilities. Just a classic case of trojan horse fucking EVERYTHING up from the inside out, slowly. Couldn't find my os disk gotta wait till Sunday to clear that up. Hoping to be up and running by Monday.
Hewlett Packard AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.19 GHZ, 1.00 GB of RAM Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This will be the 2nd time in 4 months rebooting windows.

| AVG works, but if you open files before scanning, then you will always be screwed. As I have learned from many hours and dollars wasted restoring (had a virus go after my chipset on my mother board back in the 90's) I don't even trust my kids to use their memory sticks or mp3 players on my computer. Many websites use windows vulnerabilities to infect your computer so play on the internet with a little paranoia as it has server me well. Stay the hell away from any site that offers free anything for download unless it is a trusted site. Don't ever trust anything that is found on the internet for free- including this advice... |
