lets back it up a bit. There is no point in getting an awesome card unless the rest of your system can support it. It'll most likely work, but you won't get the best bang for your buck as the card wont be used to its potential.

processor:
RAM:
power supply:
monitor (yes, it can make a difference):
other crap that could be taking away from the psu (dvd drives, sound cards):

I have an XFX 260GTX core 216. The rest of my system can barley run it, which is a 500watt psu(i think) and an AMD 5000+ unlocked and overclocked.

additionally, the 7000, 8000, and 9000 series are not getting cheaper. they are old stock and only appeal to people who need direct replacements now. it's a corner market.

best bet is to stick with last year's models and get a good deal..provides your computer can run it.

ya forfot about that part things, your powersupply has to be able to handle the newer crap...

that's an awesome deal. mine was $200. I think benchmark on the core 216 are veryt close to the 280GTX. you'd need at least a 500W psu though.

What wattage is your powersupply sen? Then go from there. What's in there might not be enough.

next time, in order to save $$ (which means she gets more $$ to shop for herself...) you should tell her which website (newegg, tigerdirect, etc) you want the item from and then she can just buy you an electronic gift certificate for that site.

After all this stuff, i found out my motherboard s only PCIE 16 1.0 rather than 2.0. that means my vid card is only running at 50% the throughput. now i need a new mobo, and while i'm at it i should goto DDR3 and the latest AMD socket and new core... i hate you all for my soon to be $500 upgrade.
