theres not much out there that doesnt diminish performance. get a really good router and a legit copy of windows, and be aware of what you are downloading. even porno can be safely downloaded thru something like azerues/utorrent and sites like isohunt.com

if you want to run a free scanning program that wont slow stuff down. avg.

Ditto on AVG. Its what I would be using if I was running Windows.

i reviewed about 20 different manufacturers when our lease for Trend expired, settled on KAV because it was light on the systems, worked well, and didn't cost too much. that was about 18 months ago. to date, not a single virus on a network of 500 machines/20 servers. it's caught a bunch, but no infections.

-it used to be free for home use, but i don't think that's true anymore. if you're buying, KAV (anti-virus 6.0) won't do you wrong, it's a comprehensive suite, if you want free, AVG used to be really good, assuming it still is, i haven't had any hands on with it in a long while though.

Ive used kaspersky with great results in the past. I would deff recommend it. AVG is still the way to go tho if you are running the antivirus passively/intermittently like on a gaming setup

I have new info on a tried and true way to beat any virus/ spyware.

1 HiJack This
2 Combo Fix
3 CCleaner

Hey Br8kaway I use this has both the free and pay version I'm using the free one. I have a Windows XP 64 bit edition,Norton & McCaffee dont make anti virus for my version of windows. Program is called AVAST. Here's the link to the free download its worked very good for me.

http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Try it works great just with the free version you have to manually update everyday or upgrade to pay version I belive its $30 for 2 years.

Between AVG, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Windows Defender, you should be covered pretty good. We use those three for all work computers, and I use it at home.
