Looking back. I'll probably go with a different processor. Something that uses less wattage. Don't want all the heat in this small setup. Not dead set on the case either. Just needs to be something that will look good in an entertainment center.

I did something similar, and built an HTPC. It froze during Blu-Ray playback (that was my goal/minimum bar). I tried every combination of XP, Win7, 32/64, and XP Home Media Edition, and DVD player software, nothing worked, it kept freezing.

The issue... was that my power supply was too weak... DOH!!

Just an FYI, get a good strong PSU!!

You forgot the OS.

And yeah, what G4RB4G3 said. I only use Corsair power supplies in my builds. Elegant modular HX models for my system, and TX models when I'm building a budget model for someone.

I've actually modified that list since. My previous roommate built it up and total cost came out to be just under $600 for a screaming fast, ultra compact HTPC. I'll post up the list when I get home.

Oh yea....I intentionally left out the OS, thanks demonoid Twisted Evil

advantages: ? hmm..

think of it, (if you cable provider or TV service offers it) - as an "ON DEMAND" service..

but just on a PC -- on my HTPC i have hundreds of movies and shows for me and the wife and of course the kids.. at my command if you will..

name a Pixar movie and i have it, the kids want to watch anyone of them - i just hit a button on the TV remote go into movie library and hit play.. so instead of putting in a DVD/BluRAy for each movie, i just scroll through the library and select at will..

screen shot below of what the library looks like.. XBMC pulls all the movie info for you - which is actually pretty cool..

i dont know if there is any real advantage-- but i will say, its really REALLY nice to have, when you kids.. my oldest knows how to use it with ease.. when he wants to watch Star wars or a Spy Kids movie (or whatever) he turns the system on and haves at it! no Bluray or DVDS to worry about getting jacked up or lost! point and click the remote..

and for me its nice as well, am watching DeadWood again, love that old show.. episode is over, click go to the next one.Season 1 over, click go to season two.. No dvds to put in.. bounce

New list: Could probably add extra HDD for storage, but I didn't include it. Upgraded Case, TV capture card, SSD, RAM, and Processor at a reduced cost. Built to maximum motherboard specs. You can build it cheaper with slower, lower end components...but why?
