| Yeah. although out here on the east coast this is the most mild winter I've had since 2005. I've only had to shovel 4 days so far which is nothing.
You also missed a pretty important step in your list though:
1. Wake. 2. Bake. 3. Shovel. |

| Canada eh!
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA 1. Vancouver: 1.5 million people and two bridges. You do the math. 2. Your $400,000 Vancouver home is just 5 hours from downtown. 3. You can throw a rock and hit three Starbucks locations. 4. There's always some sort of deforestation protest going on. 5. Weed.
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN ALBERTA 1. Big rock between you and B.C. 2. Ottawa who? 3. Tax is 5% instead ofthe approximately 200% it is for the rest of the country. 4. You can exploit almost any natural resource you can think of. 5. You live in the only province that could actually afford to be its own country. 6. The Americans below you are all in anti-government militia groups.
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN SASKATCHEWAN 1. You never run out of wheat. 2. Your province is really easy to draw. 3. You can watch the dog run away from home for hours. 4. People will assume you live on a farm. 5. Daylight savings time? Who the hell needs that!
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN MANITOBA 1. You wake up one morning to find that you suddenly have a beachfront property. 2. Hundreds of huge, horribly frigid lakes. 3. Nothing compares to a wicked Winnipeg winter. 4. You can be an Easterner or a Westerner depending on your mood. 5. You can pass the time watching trucks and barns float by.
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN ONTARIO 1. You live in the centre of the universe. 2. Your $400,000 Toronto home is actually a dump. 3. You and you alone decide who will win the federal election. 4. The only province with hard-core American-style crime.
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN QUEBEC 1. Racism is socially acceptable. 2. You can take bets with your friends on which English neighbour will move out next. 3. Other provinces basically bribe you to stay in Canada. 4. You can blame all your problems on the "Anglo A*#!%!"
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN NEW BRUNSWICK 1. One way or another, the government gets 98% of your income. 2. You're poor, but not as poor as the Newfies. 3. No one ever blames anything on New Brunswick. 4. Everybody has a grandfather who runs a lighthouse.
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN NOVA SCOTIA 1. Everyone can play the fiddle. The ones who can't, think they can. 2. You can pretend to have Scottish heritage as an excuse to get drunk and wear a kilt. 3. You are the only reason Anne Murray makes money.
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND 1. Even though more people live on Vancouver Island, you still got the big, new bridge. 2. You can walk across the province in half an hour. 3. You can drive across the province in two minutes. 4. Everyone has been an extra on "Road to Avonlea." 5. This is where all those tiny, red potatoes come from. 6. You can confuse ships by turning your porch lights on and off at night.
TOP REASONS TO LIVE IN NEWFOUNDLAND 1. If Quebec separates, you will float off to sea. 2. If you do something stupid, you have a built-in excuse. 3. The workday is about two hours long. 4. It is socially acceptable to wear your hip waders to your wedding.

| Ok I have thoughts.
[shut up! I do too!]
Firstly, I have very little idea exactly why any of that stuff is funny, but it is. Watching the dog run away from home for hours is a brilliantly composed literary picture.
Secondly, Ontario decides the election? That would happen here, (no, not Ontario dumasses, big US cities) if not for the electoral college. There's no process at work serving that purpose in Canada?
Thirdly, I've always loved Canada. Its going to make an awesome 51st state someday.

The elections dont work the same there. It's basically Ontario and Quebec that decides the elections, due mainly to larger population and the timezone difference. Yes timezone. The polls in the east are pretty much counted by the time the west scrubs can even really getting going to the polls.. I never did follow enough to give better reasons, but it's a personel observation while growing up, and pretty much why I never voted....

| Hmm, I was in Chicago this past year and had a long drunken conversation with a Quebecer about what Canada's system is like. Y'know beer is not the retention tool you might think it is when you're trying to learn about a parliamentarian system of government.
In any event, yeah, our electoral college system has its holes, like any system, but it is invaluable for giving the whole country a shot at representation in the presidential election. Otherwise New York, LA, Chicago, Atlanta and a few others would decide the election every time.

I never did follow enough to give better reasons, but it's a personel observation while growing up, and pretty much why I never voted.... We don't do that anymore. Canada now has a uniform closing time across the country and no results can legally be published before all the votes are in. But yes, I remember when I used to do that. It still sort of looks that way, as the tallies are brought in usually from East to West (since people on the East coast have had longer to count them), but by then all the votes are already submitted. |

Yeah, we have nothing like the electoral college since we don't vote for our prime minister. We each vote for individual representatives in our ridings, and the party with the largest number of seats wins the election, this often results in minority or coalition governments. The major problem that this poses is if a particular party that you want to win doesn't have a representative in your current riding. For instance, say I wanted to vote for the green party and there wasn't a representative here for them I couldn't. Thus I would either have to not vote, or vote for a MP that belongs to another party. However, it also promotes the idea of not voting along party lines and allows individuals to pick the candidate that will best serve their individual area. In contrast I prefer this version over the electoral college since, theoretically (and practically if we look at 2000), the popular vote has no official control over anything, it is just a suggestion for their electors in the electoral college. I've always wondered, does it not seem odd to Americans to have only ~540 people that actually make the decision? |

| It does, and 2000 is the textbook example. But like I said, a straight popular vote, even though its is now practical in the modern age whereas it wasn't when the Electoral College system was devised, would result in the even less desirable effect of 8-10 major cities deciding the national election. | |

| Proud Canadian
A US first grade teacher explains to her class that she is an American. She asks her students to raise their hands if they are American too.
Not really knowing why but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands explode into the air like flashy fireworks. There is, however, one exception. A girl named Kristen has not gone along with the crowd. The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different.. "Because I am not an American." "Then", asks the teacher, "What are you?". "I'm a proud Canadian," boasts the little girl. The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Kristen why she is a Canadian. "Well, my mom and dad are Canadians, so I'm a Canadian too. The teacher is now really angry. "That's no reason," she says loudly. "What if your mom was a crappy hockey player, and your dad was a crappy hockey player? Would that mean that you're a crappy hockey player too?" A pause, and a smile. Then, says Kristen, "Nope! That'd mean I'm an American!"
